Overview
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) causes an infection that damages the liver. In children, hepatitis C can be present from birth or acquired later. The infection leads to liver inflammation and, if untreated, can progress to liver scarring and serious complications over time.
How is Hepatitis C Spread?
HCV is spread through blood-to-blood contact with an infected person. In adults, the most common way is sharing needles for drug use.
Mother-to-child transmission can occur during pregnancy or childbirth. Up to 45% of children born with HCV clear the infection naturally by age two without treatment. Children who do not clear the virus develop chronic hepatitis C, which can cause long-term liver damage if left untreated.
How is Hepatitis C Diagnosed in Children?
Diagnosis involves blood testing:
Detects if the child has been exposed to HCV.
Detects active infection by measuring viral genetic material.
Children born to mothers with HCV should be tested after birth. Testing can begin as early as two months old with the RNA test. Definitive testing is done at 18 months with the antibody test and RNA test if antibodies are present.
How is Hepatitis C Treated in Children?
Children diagnosed with HCV should undergo regular monitoring through blood and imaging tests to assess liver health and track infection status.
For children who develop chronic hepatitis C, effective treatment options are available:
- Direct-acting antiviral (DAA) medications are safe and highly effective, approved for children as young as three years old.
- These treatments can eradicate the virus in about 98% of patients completing the full course.
Early treatment helps prevent liver damage and improves long-term health outcomes.
